Registration, beginning Feb 1, is required: Register in person, or call Noël at 352-0576 x 35, or AIM us at lgpublib.

WE ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Yes, it may be corny, but think of the LaGrange Public Library as a caterpillar, closing down for a few weeks in October to emerge as a gorgeous, brilliant butterfly in November!

We are unbelievably excited to unveil the new Young Adult Room to the teens of LaGrange, full of plush, comfy seating (with funky fabrics!), plenty of natural light, an expanded non-fiction collection, and the best YA fiction collections ever! The Library will also be a WiFi hotspot, so bring out your laptops, too.

But of course, that’s not all. We’ve hired a friendly, intelligent, and creative new assistant, Debra M., who will staff the YA desk in the evenings and on most weekends. She is bursting with ideas for programs (and she’s very nice to talk to, too!). We’re planning more frequent and more varied programming, too — like outdoor book discussions, Poetry in the Park, Saturday Morning Teens and ‘Toons, and new stuff like that. You’ll be able to read all about it on our brand-new website, coming in October!

So keep your eyes glued to this space! We in the LaGrange Public Library Young Adult Department want to do the best job for you that we can, so let us know if you have any suggestions or ideas. Give us a call at 352-0576, or email ya@lagrangelibrary.org, or AIM us at lgpublib.

See you soon – keep reading!

Hello, all you Summer Reading Program Readers!!!

Just a couple of reminders:

For all questions about the Young Adult Summer Reading Program, including where to sign up, how to sign up, and how to report a book that you read, please come to the Adult Reference Desk, especially if I am not at the Young Adult Desk. This is especially true if you come in the evening, when I am usually not at the Library.
You have TWO AND A HALF MORE WEEKS – we’re halfway through the Program – to sign up for the Young Adult Summer Reading Program and to report the books that you read. REMEMBER – you just have to read THREE books, one of which should be a mystery, in order to WIN COOL PRIZES! But you also have to come back to the Adult Reference Desk to report the books you read on your registration card, so that I know you read them!
If you have any questions, just call me at the Young Adult Desk: 352-0576. Or email me at ya@lagrangelibrary.org, or AIM me at lgpublib. Calling is probably best.
Have fun this summer and KEEP READING!!

You’re invited ...to a Totally Expected Party

You’re invited to a Totally Expected Party on Sunday, March 25 in honor of International Tolkien Reading Day.

Created by the original Tolkien Society in the UK, this event is to celebrate reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.

We’ll be partying at the library from 2 – 3 pm. There’ll be lots of Middle Earth snacks (like Elven Lembas, Bilbo’s Tea Cake, Muffins, scones, and apple cider). We’ll hear short readings from The Hobbitt, The Lord of the Rings, and several lesser known Tolkien works, including a wonderful CD recording of the author himself reading the riddle contest from The Hobbitt. We’ll also have a riddle contest and an unconventional lesson in speaking Elvish. (Ever wonder how to say, “May a Balrog eat you?” in Elvish? You’ll learn at our party!) Register in advance by calling 352-0576, ext. 23. Or just show up on the day of the event!

Fan Boy and Goth Girl Contest

What Else Would a Comic Book Geek Want?

Author Barry Lyga, whose debut novel The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl (Houghton, 2006) follows the life of Fanboy, a comic book-loving teen who wants just three things in life. One is a Giant-Size X-Men #1 in mint condition, another is a new computer, but the third thing is never revealed to the reader. Lyga is now running a contest on his Web site asking readers to guess what the mysterious third thing is, and explain why Fan Boy wants it. The winner of the contest will receive an iPod, but the type of iPod will be based on the number of entries Lyga receives (50 entries = Shuffle, 51–100 entries = Nano, etc.). The contest, which is currently running, ends February 15.

Turn in the Survey -- Win a Prize!

Keep an eye out for the dark green Young Adult Summer Reading Program fliers going out to schools now...because they're worth a prize! Get your hands on a flier and fill out the survey on the first page, cut it off (so you still have the Summer Reading Program schedule!) and return it to the Young Adult desk at the Library. I have prizes to hand out to all who return the survey! The survey helps me and the YA-WHOOOs figure out what everyone likes to do and why you come to the library. I value your opinions -- that's why I'm offering you an incentive. So do yourself -- and me -- a favor, and fill out a survey and return it. Could NOT be EASIER.
