Here's What's Happening...in May, June, and July

MAY YA -WHOOO MEETING
Saturday, May 13, 2:30-4:00 pm
Join us for our last meeting of the summer, as we discuss our group’s progress and plan for the future. Then we’ll continue making decorations for the YA Summer Reading Program -- Creature Feature – and as always, we’ll entice you with SNACKS and a FREE BOOK!

YOUNG ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM --
JOIN OUR “CREATURE FEATURE!”
Monday, June 5 through Friday, July 21
Registration begins Monday, June 5

Young adults aged 12-18 are invited to prowl in and devour a mouthful of tasty books this summer! For every 3 YA books you read, you are entered to win cool prizes, including books, yummy gift certificates, and T-shirts. Register at the Adult Reference desk – and get ready for seven wild weeks!

THURSDAY AFTERNOONS AT THE MOVIES
Thursday, June 15, and Thursday, July 13, 3:00-5:00 pm

Our first summer movie is Whale Rider, about a fierce young New Zealander who proves that she is just as good as any boy in her tribe. In July, it’s man vs. the powers of nature as humans battle the gods of the forest in Princess Mononoke, a spectacular animé movie.

SUMMER BOOK DISCUSSIONS
Wednesday, June 21, and Wednesday, July 5, 7:00-8:30 pm

We’ll kick off our YA book discussions with a book for younger teens, called Owl In Love, about an unusual middle-schooler who can change into an owl. We’ll follow up in July with a slightly more challenging book, Touching Spirit Bear, about a cruel, out-of-control boy whose life is changed forever when he is mauled almost to death by an enormous, mythical bear. All teens are invited to read and join us for both books. Register at the YA desk beginning Wednesday, June 7; space for each discussion is limited to 10 participants. Both books will be available at the Circulation desk Wednesday, June 7.

BE A CRAFTY CREATURE
Thursdays, June 22 and July 6, 3-4 pm
In June, we’ll create a few pipe-cleaner critters. Stick ‘em on your shirt, on your guitar, or in your hair! In July, bring in a T-shirt to cover with animal tracks using fabric paint. Call the Young Adult department with questions at 352-0576 x 35.

S-S-S-LITHERY, LEATHERY CREATURES AND ICE CREAM FOR DINNER!
Thursday, July 20, 4-6:30 pm

As a reward for weeks of reading, join us for our first ever Young Adult End-of-Summer -Reading-Program Party! From 4-5:15 pm, Traveling World of Reptiles’s Dave DiNaso will share 15 of his hand-raised reptiles with us, along with tales of his international adventures. Come prepared to look at and to pet his “incredibly friendly” creatures! Then stick around for dinner—ice cream with all the trimmings and toppings—as we build our own sundaes. Hope to see you there!

BECOME A BOOK BUDDY
Your friends tell you you’re a good listener. Want to get some credit for that talent? Think about becoming a Book Buddy, and be paired up with a younger reader who will practice his or her oral reading skills while you listen. For more information, call the Youth Services department at 352-0576.
